The French Impressionist, Camille Pissarro, was born in the Caribbean, as was John Audobon and although these two artists are not recognized as "Caribbean" their work have profoundly inspired the artists of the region.
The Cuban painter, Wilfredo Lam, (1902 -1982), was the first Caribbean artist to be recognized by the West. Lam's association with the great Pablo Picasso and his contemporary, Georges Braque, catapulted Caribbean art to a height that would have otherwise taken decades to happen.
In 1960, the destiny of Caribbean art was changed forever when Jean-Michel Basquiat was born of a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother. Basquiat's work which has achieved near cult status, now fetches millions of dollars and while few Caribbean artists command such astronomical prices for their work, some are included in the most prestigious art institutions of the world, for example. Llewellyn Xavier is represented in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The American Museum of Natural History, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada, to name a few and his work is avidly collected throughout the world.
There is no doubt that acquiring work by Llewellyn Xavier is a sure investment.
